Open Question: Cockatiel in the bottom of his cage, is he trying to copy a nesting parakeet?
I’ve read all the bird material that says sitting in the bottom of the cage means they are sick. So I already know all about that. I am currently looking into finding an avian vet in the area, just in case. However, do you think it is possible that my male cockatiel, Jeff is merely trying to copy my female parakeet, Sid? Here are the facts: 1.) Their cages are 10 feet apart, but directly in line of sight of each other (they don’t play with each other, after the standard quarantine period, I tried letting them play once a few months back and a fight almost broke out, so I decided they can’t really play together, at least not for now). 2.) About a month ago I could tell my parakeet was about to lay eggs so I went to the pet store to get her calcium fortified egg treats. I think Jeff is afraid of the piñata, which I hung from the top of the cage. (He was afraid last time I got him new toys too. I figured he would get over this. Although since getting the pinata he stopped eating out of the food dish near the new toy, he’s only been eating out of the bottom food dish.) 4.) Although for the first 5 months my two birds never communicated or talked. In the last 2 weeks they started talking to each other (or maybe just copying). They chirp back and forth at least a few times a day, for about a minute at a time. 5.) About 3 weeks ago Sid started laying eggs. At first she didn’t sit on them. Once she had 3 or 4 she just started laying on them, which was about a week ago, maybe a little bit longer. Now that she has 5 eggs she spends most of her time laying on them, except when she is eating, and preening herself. Also she will visit with me for 20 seconds at a time, then she wants to go back to her eggs right away. She also still talks to Jeff (while laying on her eggs, she’ll chirp to him). 6.) So I first started noticing Jeff going in the bottom of his cage a month ago, just occasionally; not really a regular thing until the last week. 7.) Jeff is still pretty playful, and very talkative. He has still been singing all his favorites tunes. And like I said he won’t really go to the top of the cage right now, but he plays with his bird confetti (which I put in his bottom food bowl) all the time! He also still climbs around on the bars, his favorite is to hang from the side and flap around, and he still has been doing that. He also enjoys purposefully throwing seeds out of the cage one at a time, I think he likes watching me clean them up. His activity level seems normal he’s just been spending more time at the bottom (food dish area). And he just sleeps in the bottom (actual bottom) of the cage. 8.) I looked at all the symptoms on this vet check list: http://www.exoticbirdhospital.com/HealthyBirdChart.pdf Besides the bottom of the cage thing, the only other thing that kind of sounds like him is: Dull feathering (but I still haven’t fully given him a “makeover” since I adopted him, he hates baths, I’ve tried everything) and May sit at feeder but not seen eating (but he’s usually playing with his confetti or tossing seeds) I am hoping that Jeff is just copying Sid. Maybe since they just started talking she is telling him to do it? Or maybe Jeff is still just afraid of his new toy. I don’t know. Any ideas? Thanks for the advice sky. Unfortunately he is on a mainly seed/some pellet/some dried fruit diet. I’ve offered him fresh foods before. In a separate food dish he complete ignores it. If I put it on top of his seeds, he doesn’t eat at all until I remove whatever it is. Jeff sometimes eats my indoor plant. It is a palm. I believe it is either a parlor palm or paradise palm (both safe according to this website http://www.cockatielcottage.net/houseplants.html). My mom has birds, she suggested the dull feathering (almost greasy) was because he was getting too many seeds. (She compared it to a human eating too many nuts, which made sense to me.) I’ve been tricking him into eating a little of this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+10441+22072&pcatid=22072 by mixing it with his bird confetti. I think it has helped a little bit. His new feathers look much better than in the past. Hopefully he’ll come around to fresh foods soon :-\ I called to make a vet appointment and explained the situation to the vet tech. She told me to remove the new toy and also move his cage so he can’t see my parakeet. I did this during lunch and by the time I was headed back to work he was already sitting on his old favorite spot. Now I just have to make sure he sleeps on the perch instead of on the bottom of the cage! I thought putting the new toy near his favorite spot would give him something to attack/play with while he sat there. I guess he showed me! By the way, my parakeet is defending her unfertile eggs to the death! She bit me for the very first time in over 2 years! I feel bad that all the work she’s putting into it is for nothing. She laid eggs last fall too… maybe next summer I’ll get her a boyfriend ;)

One of the most tranquil places to be is my aunt and uncles backyard. The fragrance of newly bloomed pink Impatiens, blue Phlox and yellow Lady Bank Rose fills the evening air. A low hum comes from bees buzzing around the Wysteria Vine that shades the wooden swing below. Chipmunks scurry along the ground in search of a stray sunflower seed that has fallen from the bird feeder above. A bullfrog's deep croak echos off the still pool of water that surrounds him. Yellow Finches that perch on trees nearby sing a melodious tune. At the corner of the porch is an antique barrel filled to the brim with rain water used for watering the garden. Birdhouses that hang from the tin roof of the porch gently sway in the warm summer breeze. The chirping of crickets bring warm feelings of home in the country. The bright green lizzard is well camouflaged as it rests on a fern. My aunt and uncle's backyard is the perfect place to relax.
